Summer has officially ended in the Philippines but the heat shows no signs of stopping. With the monsoon season hot on the heels of sweltering weather, a menacing new enemy is poised to emerge: moist and muggy humidity.
Moisture in the air can drastically impair a perfume’s longevity and sillage. With high tropical humidity, the sweetest scents can turn into an oppressive and overpowering mess – but don’t fret.
Brushing up on your perfume selection techniques is the trick to smelling fresh all day. Luckily, we at Perfume Philippines have the fragrance forte to help you in selecting the best perfume for the rainy season. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Go for perfumes with fresh accords
In the Philippines where rainy days are often choking and stuffy, fresh accords are your best friend. Aromatic and refreshing fragrances do a great job at thwarting the stuffiness high humidity brings (perking you up when the gloomy weather gets you down is an added bonus).
Opt for the zesty flavors of citrus accords, light aquatic fragrances, non-cloying white floral accords, and gloom-busting herbal notes like mint and basil for instant freshness.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue Eau Intense Pour Homme
Key notes:
Grapefruit, juniper, and musk
Has the citrus-watery freshness you need to instantly feel revitalized.
Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Bamboo
Key notes:
Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, bamboo, green tea, and cucumber
Green Tea Bamboo evokes the spirit of traditional bamboo gardens with a calm and relaxing nature-inspired scent.
2. Opt for perfumes with a higher concentration
High humidity means perfumes need to work extra hard to stay on your skin, and fragrances with low concentrations bear the brunt of the rainy season.
To get over the longevity issue, try to select fragrances with higher concentrations. Eau de parfum, or any perfume with concentrations higher than 15 percent, has the staying power you’re looking for to smell good during the rainy days.
Bear in mind that this tip only applies to hot and humid rainy days. If you’re constrained to a cooler environment like an airconditioned room, fragrances have more staying power and a low-concentration perfume can tide you over.
This also applies to generally cooler ‘ber’ months where a simple cologne can get you by.
3. Select perfumes that perk you up
Pluviophiles aside, torrential rain has the tendency to put a damper on everyone’s spirits. Luckily, fragrances excel in the mood-enhancing department.
Light and bright fragrances that remind you of the summer are stellar options even for rainy days, so keep your eyes peeled for citrus notes like lime, lemon, and bergamot or refreshing herbal notes like mint, eucalyptus, or lemongrass.
White florals like jasmine and lily-of-the-valley offer just the right sweetness to shoo away the darkest clouds.
Try these on for size when you feel down in the dumps:
Salvatore Ferragamo Acqua Essenziale
Key notes:
Mint, lemon, geranium, lavender, and rosemary
Inspired by the classic style of a refined gent, this chic signature personifies style and class with its sophisticated blend.
Key notes:
Galbanum leaves, bergamot, lemon, jasmine, freesia, and lily-of-the-valley
If you're looking to feel like you just spent some time in nature and had a chance to recharge, Gucci Bloom's spicy, sharp, and herbal notes are your best friend.
